Resilient, sculptural, and effortlessly cool, African Jade is a much-loved classic known for its small, glossy green leaves and thick, woody stems. Often mistaken for a traditional jade plant, Portulacaria afra has a lighter, more refined look with a naturally bonsai-style growth habit that becomes more character-filled with age. It suits modern interiors, sunny windowsills, patios, and outdoor pots where a tough but stylish plant is needed.
Exceptionally hardy and drought-tolerant, African Jade thrives in warm climates like FNQ and is ideal for busy plant parents or beginners. It responds beautifully to pruning, making it perfect for shaping, training, or simply letting it grow into a relaxed, architectural form.
🪴 Planting tip: Loves bright light to full sun for strong growth and compact form. Allow soil to dry out between watering and always use a very free-draining mix. Overwatering is the only thing it truly dislikes.
🌸 Flowering: Small, delicate pink flowers may appear in ideal conditions, though flowering is uncommon in pots.
📏 Mature size: Can reach 1–2 m tall over time in the ground or large pots, but easily kept smaller with pruning.
