Alpinia caerulea Red Back
OUTLINE: A lush native ginger with glossy evergreen leaves that is tan on the back. In the summer, clusters of dark blue berries accompany the appearance of creamy-white flowers. If you're tempted to try any berries, remember that only the flesh, not the seeds, is edible and that birds adore them.
USE IN: Ideal for shady tropical gardens and pots. shield against the cold.
Plant in well-draining soil in an area with partial to complete shade.
CARE: Mulch the plant and water it frequently until it becomes established, which takes around 12 weeks. During dry times, drink frequently. If plants start to seem messy, prune the stems to the ground; new shoots will grow in their place. For luxuriant new growth, fertilise frequently with an organic liquid fertiliser.
